I have a Debbie Bliss pattern (from the UK) that calls for a no 3, or 3 mm needle. Here in the US MY number 3 is 2.75 mm. Will this be a problem, or do I have to order another set from the UK?
Thanks in advance |

You do not have to order a set from the UK. (1) You can find needles sized in mm in most US yarn shops. (2) Knit a swatch. The gauge is what is important, not the needle size. Try first on the needles you have, and then see if you need to size up or down. If so, see (1). Good luck!

I endorse what Anderknit has said. Sometimes it is easier to go by the mm sizes because 3mm or 5mm or 4.5 mm or whatever, is the same all over the world. Don't worry if you have to buy another size needle. You can use them over and over again. I have needles that are over 50 years old and they still do the job. The aim of a knitter is to have a full supply so whenever you want to knit something you do not have to worry about whether you have the right size needle. Good luck!

Also brands vary as to what is a US 2 or 3 or whatever, so mm is the way to go.

I want to second what Grandmoogi and Donna said about mm sizing. Silly of me not to say it in the first place, as especially in the smaller sizes, mm is the only way to be sure of what you are getting.

| Just to add to the confusion I was filing away some circular needles this AM and discovered that some recently purchased 2.75 mm needles had one end that measured 2.75m and the other end measured 3.00m. I do use a metal measuring ruler which I feel is accurate. My feeling is there is a lot of wiggle room in "swatches" and time, weather, etc affect my gauge indiscriminately in spite of my efforts. |

Don't forget that the FINISH on your needle will also affect your gauge. I can knit the same yarn on a regular Addi Turbo, and Addi Lace and a Signature Circ -- all with the same mm size and get a different gauge with each. Same goes for other materials such as bamboo, etc. So be sure you swatch with the actual needle you will be knitting with.
