Hi, my name is Lisa. I am a long time crocheter, but sort of gave up on it as I was finding it is too hard on my wrists, and never got the knack of knitting. Then my Mom introduced me to hand knit socks. She made me a pair 4 years ago and I was hooked! I needed more! I begged her to make me another pair, but she taught me to knit my own instead. So I have been knitting ever since. I knit socks exclusively for 3 years, then started doing mittens, touques, a cowl, a shawl and finally a sweater. The spinning started two years ago with a drop spindle and some raw wool in the grease and some alpaca fiber. I washed, carded and made rolags and spun my fibers and really enjoyed the whole process. I rented a wheel a few months ago and am looking to buy one soon. Well, that is my fiber addiction! I can't wear commercial socks any more and I am really into natural fibers. I gave away all my acrylics, lol.

Hi from NW Pennsylvania and welcome to KR. I agree, hand knit socks are the only socks to wear! I knit them for myself, my DS and my best friend.
I have a spinning wheel but haven't been spinning lately. I lent it to a friend to try, since she uses a spindle and wanted to try a wheel. Now the wheel is at her house and I feel like spinning! Isn't that the way things usually go!
Sharon in NW PA I always wanted my own library but I didn't realize it would be all knitting books!

Hi Judy,
My hand knit socks are popular gifts in my family, too. ;)

Welcome to KR, Lisa. You must have a treasure trove of handknit socks by now, how awesome. I am just knitting my third pair, but they are only the first pair for me.
Glad to hear you've branched out into the wider world of knitting and fiber. It is addicting, isn't it? I started knitting a year and a half ago, picked up spinning a year ago, and I just can't stop! Not that I'd ever want to.
What kind of wheel do you think you'll buy? I am looking, too.

Welcome Lisa from Oz. I do not knit socks but I have been knitting lots of slippers. I think I might sort of slide across to bedsocks and see where that takes me.

Hi again,
I am sure once you start wearing hand knitted socks you won't want to wear anything else. My only problem is finding a good yarn for summer...any suggestions? I have to wear shoes to work - no sandals allowed.
I am looking at either a used single treadle Lendrum that folds (I have yet to try it - it is an hour away) or a new Schacht Sidekick, exactly like the one I rented for two weeks. It is a bit of a matter of price, but I don't want to be upgrading my wheel after a few years - I want to buy one and keep it forever. I really liked the double treadle, so I am not sure how the single treadle will appeal to me. If I can deal with single treadle and remember to switch feet every 30 minutes or so, I will go for the Lendrum as I can't really afford to spend $1000 for the Sidekick plus accessories right now. But I really want a wheel now and my family will chip in for my birthday, so it is really a hard decision. My other main thing is it has to be portable. Lisa :)

I would be going for the one you want and looking at ways to raise the cash. They reckon quality lasts long after you forget the price.

Hi Grand-moogi, That is what I decided to do. I will wait until another year to buy a wheel, and rent in the meantime. I might as well be happy with what I buy. Even if I save a few hundred dollars a year, it won't be that far away. Thanks for the advice, everyone. Zoomom :)

Will the shop let you do a rent to own? It is a shame to see the rental money going out of the pocketbook with nothing to show for it.
Grand-moogi, I can't believe you don't knit socks! Of course I don't blame you. Your whole family would be waiting in line for more and more socks!

Hi Shalee, Actually, yes, any rentals are counted towards a purchase of a wheel, so it is kind of like rent to own. I calculated that I have to rent for a year straight(52 weeks) to own it, lol.
