At the moment and for the last 4 weeks, I have had something else going on. Shaking violently with fever and throwing up. Nauseas all the time. Doc can't work out what it is. I am soooo sick of it.

Although I'm not a doctor, could you have some kind of intestinal parasite? Has the doctor run tests on what you have thrown up? Blood tests? Labs do not test for everything, just the specific tests the doctor orders. Are you on any anitbiotics? Did you leave Australia on a trip before this started?
There are so many things that could cause the problem. I'm not surprised the doctor is having a hard time with the diagnosis. Has there been anything you can tell him that you haven't thought important? Think about what you were doing before this started and make notes, sort of like reconstructing a diary. Where you ate, did you go out of town, any stray animals around. With it being winter, down there, I can't think of anything crawling around that could be the cause.
Look back at your posts, to jog your memory, maybe that will give you a clue.
I remember my aunt telling me about her friend that was very sick and in the hospital. After 3 days my aunt convinced my dad, a doctor, to go see the gal. After 10 minutes of talking to the sick gal my father went to her doctors. He told them what was wrong with her and the tests to run to prove it. He was right. Yes, she got the proper treatment and got better.
Unfortunately doctors today have so much more to learn and deal with. Even a good internist can't remember everything he studied in medical school. That is why I tell you to try to reconstruct your movements. One insignificant item could be the "light bulb" moment, for your doctor.
Hope you get better soon.

Oh Sharon I wish I could talk to your Dad!!! The only thing we can think of now is that it might be the latest drug I have been put on for the rheumatoid arthritis. It is methotrexate and its no. 1 side effect is nausea. I am hoping my husband will be able to talk to my rheumatologist in the morning.

I wish he were still alive. As to the methotrexate, you should read the following:
http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/druginfo/meds/a682019.html
It does say: If you are taking methotrexate to treat rheumatoid arthritis, it may take 3 to 6 weeks for your symptoms to begin to improve, and 12 weeks or longer for you to feel the full benefit of methotrexate.
Darn, I hate to think you would have to put up with the symptoms that much longer.

How did your appointment with the Rheumatologist go?? It is true that methotrexate takes on average about 4 to 8 weeks to take effect. (I've been on it for 22 years). Some people do have difficulty tolerating it. Am anxious to hear that you are feeling better. Sending good wishes your way. judy |

If you took methotrexate, when you (unknowingly) already had an infection, it can cause such side effects. You said you have nausea, please make sure you are not dehydrated.

I have just come home from a week in hospital, lots of tests and lots of drips. My doc had phone conversations with the rheumatologist's office and apparently they were most impressed with how diligent he was. They said Methotrexate does not cause that severity of problems (ESR 100, CRP 165) and white blood cell count extremely high do not know the count. They could not find what caused the infection but plied me with antibiotics and I am home with more of them and pills to quell the nausea. I have stopped the methotrexate because it is an immunosuppressant and with that kind of infection we thought I do not need my immune system to be suppressed. Anyway I will be trotting off to another specialist next week. Fever is gone and those horrid inflammation markers are on the way down. and hey! I am back on the forum and knitting again!

Oh I love that prescription! We have a knit and natter group and lately we have all been ill with one thing and another. I must tell them that when we can't knit and natter we have to knit and nap. They will love it.

Glad to hear from you. Have been wondering how you were doing, and missed you. Glad to hear you are on the mend.Sometimes it takes several days of IV antibiotics to help turn things around. Glad you are knitting again! That ,in itself is good medicine. judy |

Hi Grand-moogi, Saw your post in "knitting and the Olympics" and just wanted to say "hang in there". Sometimes the hardest part of being sick is the time it takes to truely feel better. I'm glad you are on the mend and hope you feel better each day! It is always nice to see you active in the forums! |

Hi dear friend (online)!
It is so tough to make a swift recovery sometimes. It sounds like you have been very ill, with your week-long hospital stay and all.
I read all of your posts, and just wanted to say "feel better", and "be patient". My mom always used to say that when you are starting to recover, if you are feeling grumpy about everything, you are in recovery! But only at the beginning. Just be patient, and be good to yourself. Your body needs time. Real time.
Best wishes for healing and happiness and all the good things,
Anna
