When it says cast on a multiple of 7 sts plus 2, is that the same as cast on 9. Help I just don't quite get it. Thank you.

depends on how many sts you need. 7 times number plus 2 sts. so if you need 7 repeats it would be 51 sts. if you only need 1 repeat it would be 9. 2 repeats 16.

That means the 7-stitch repeat however many times you need it for the project width, plus 2 more stitches ... those "plus 2" stitches are added only one time to the entire thing.

It sounds like there might be one stitch on either side of the seven pattern repeat. Is it a scarf? What I would do is cast on 14 stitches and do a swatch with two repeats of the seven stitches. Cast off, measure that, and then figure out how wide a scarf you want and then you'll know how many repeats to do. (If your swatch of two repeats is 4 inches wide, then each repeat is 2 inches. If you want an 18 inch wide scarf, you'd do 9 repeats--63 stitches--plus the two 'extra' ones.

There are 7 sts to the pattern. You could cast on a multiple of 7 sts but, the piece would not be symmetrical. It would look chopped off on the left edge. So, you are told to cast on a multiple of 7 sts (7,14,21..77...777), then cast on 2 more (9, 16, 23...79...779). Good luck.
