OK, Lella started this in another thread:

quote:
I always keep yarns in the freezer, when I can. It's the perfect place. But now I have so much yarn that the small chest freezer is full. I used to start with the pattern, but then, having lived through the great yarn drought of the late 80's, early 90's, I started stashing.

What was the Great Yarn Drought, please? It sounds bitter and gloomy. I wasn't knitting then. Anybody please chime in.

Hi,

The Great Yarn Drought, perish the thought, I have never heard of it and hope its an urban myth.

Knit in peace and harmony.

I'm not 100% sure, but having knit since the late 1960's (I learned as a child!!!) I can tell you things were not always as they are now in the knitting world! Certainly there was no internet. Knitting has had it's day in the sun, and then plunged into darkness, more than once in the last 50 years. There were times when the ONLY yarn we could get in the rural south was Red Heart purchased at K-Mart. And there was the time when even Sears sold yarn, and there were yarn stores in the malls! Now, with the internet and the ability to order yarn from just about anywhere, I am hoping our last "yarn drought" is behind us forever!!!!

The Great Yarn Drought was the late (mid to late)80's and nearly all of the 90's. I worked in a yarn shop until the thing hit, and then a bunch of shops just shut down, some of them were wonderful ones. When great yarns became available without a hundred mile round trip, I started stashing! Sorry it took me awhile to answer. I've been off my knitting for quite awhile and now just starting back after a couple of cortisone shots. hehe
