I am going to knit a wedding shawl for my granddaughter an I am stumped about which yarn to use. It is to be lace knitted in sock weight on size 4 US needles. I want it to be wool or a combo wool silk, something that will block really well. I don't want anything fuzzy or with a distinct halo. Maybe I can't find what I want because there are too many choices (like the grocery store). I appreciate any suggestions.

Have you settled on a pattern? Sometimes that points the way and it is easier to decide on a yarn.

What time of the year is the wedding, and where is it? And what time of day?

A yarn like Sundara Fingering Silky Merino would be lovely -- I've worked with it several times. It's 50/50 silk and merino. She doesn't have it in stock all the time, but I'm sure there's another yarn base out there that's similar.

I love Jaggerspun Zephyr wool-silk laceweight for something like this.

I too would use Jaggerspun Zephyr wool-silk laceweight. It knits up nicely, blocks crisply and is soft to the touch. I also really like that it comes on a cone to minimize having to connect ends.

I knit a lace shawl with Heritage Silk, a sock yarn. It blocked nicely. This is an inexpensive yarn that comes in lots of colors.

Dale's Baby Wool and Spud and Cloe Fine are also nice fingering weight yarns.
