I need help!
I am unable to figure out how to do the cast on for the Swallowtail Shawl in the IK fall 2006 issue.
The pattern begins with:
Using crochet hook and wast yarn, ch 4 fasten off. With Shawl yarn and knitting needles, pick up and knit 1 st in each of 2 nubs at back chain.
This part I understand - I don't understand this:
after knitting x numbers of rows, pick up and knit 1 st in each of garter ridges along side edge.
Somehow, I cannot visualize how this is done.
Is there some site or book that gives you an explanation on how this is done?
Thanks,
Carol |

You're going to start with 2 stitches that you knit for x rows. This gives you a long narrow strip. When it says to pick up and knit 1 st in each of the garter ridges, you're going to pick up stitches along the length of what you've just knit. This is a technique used for neck shaping.

Every shawl of Evelyn's I've done starts out like this. Yeah, it's difficult to imagine, but have you tried it?? You knit x number of rows, then take a look at what's hanging off your needles. Look at the edge...see those little bumps...those are the garter ridges. Just grasp on to that long knitted thing you just knitting, hold it sideways, and pick up a stitch into each one of those ridges. You are just sticking your needle into the little spaces of what you just knit so you've got a horizontal piece of knitting instead of a vertical piece. When you get to the bottom, you'll have the 2 stitches you picked up from your crocheted chain...undo the chain, get ahold of those stitches, and knit them up, too.
Don't worry too much about this...the point is to get from a long skinny two stitch vertical thing into a horizontal thing with lots of sitches, including the starting 2 stitches, the stitches you pick up along the long edge, and the 2 stitches you started with.
Good luck!! I'm about to start this shawl as well!

Thank you Elizabeth and Mari,
I ordered the yarn for it this morning, Misti Alpaca Lace in light blue. I am thinking I should have ordered it in the brown.
I will practice with left-over yarn and see if I can do this.
Again, thank you for your help!

I happen to be a big "blue" fan so I like your choice. I find that browns leave me washed out and I don't care for that look.
Great idea to practice first. I think that once you actually have it in your hands, you'll understand it. You CAN do it! |

You already got help but maybe this will help too:
Cast on tutorial
It is a tutorial regarding the Flower Basket Shawl, which is the same as the Swallowtail...
Good luck :) Beee

Beee, thank you for the link. I found this yesterday, and that does help.
I will join the KAL, now if I can have a few more pair of hands to finish the other WIPs that I have on the needles!
