Bottom line: not a knitter's paradise!

On a recent visit to Bucharest, where my daughter lives and works (as a missionary) I happened across a few yarn shops. They were tiny, and also sold ribbons, lace, and other sewing notions. I easily spotted a few familiar wool yarn socks (sp? Schammermaeyer), but most else was synthetic--and behind the counter, which was always obscured with other "stuff."

I saw many many items on the streets that were crocheted--but not knitted. And at the preschools my daughter runs, there were numerous crocheted "blankies" on the kids' nap beds, but not knit ones. And most of what I saw was definitely synthetic yarn, in the shiniest sense.

All of this is in keeping with a country with so many economic problems. And in fairness I should add that it was blazing hot while I was there . . .

Let's just say, there is a darn good reason, IMHO, that former Eastern Bloc capitals are not tourist meccas . . .
