What is your all-time favorite sock pattern? Do you have a standby? What yarn do you knit it with? Sharon |

My favorite sock pattern is Here There Be Dragon socks - I bought it online from Keyboard Biologist. The yarn I used was Sweet Georgia Superwash Sock - in what else? Dragon!

After a lot of experimentation, I found (well, cobbled together) a sock pattern that fits both my feet (ribbed cuff, reverse round heel, serious gusset increases) and my preferred methods (Turkish CO, Magic Loop, both socks at once). When I'd finally gotten the right combination of elements (which only took, oh, 15 pairs ;) I wrote it up, and now I'm sticking to it!

Molly, Those are beautiful socks! Thank you for sharing. You also have a wonderful stash. Have you tried the Schaefer Anne for socks yet? And how about the Lana? What is your favorite? Thanks, Sharon |

Molly have you tried Judy's Magic Cast On? (sorry don't have the link at the moment.) I like it better than the Turkish cast on. I'm in the process of writting my own sock pattern with the best parts of other patterns put together for my own foot size. A little of this and a little of that. Knowing the foot will fit well for me, I can then come with any cuff pattern I fancy. Its all in the numbers and gauge. Oh and of course knitting a swatch.

| Just a plain or slightly fancy rib pattern (but is HAS to be stretchy) down to the heel. Then, if they're going to be worn with sandals, continue the pattern on the instep and top of the foot. If they're to wear with closed shoes, I like a plain stockinette for the foot. |

I swatched some Anne for a pair of gloves that ended up getting ripped, but it's darned fun to knit with and looks gorgeous - it's definitely on the list. Lana - if you mean Lana Grossa Meilenweit, I've knit two pairs from it, one for myself and one for a sister, and I'm thrilled with both, it's great yarn. If you mean the Lana Gatto stuff, I've knit two pairs from that, too, and quite liked it, though it's somewhat splitty.

I've used it for a couple of non-sock items and I like it, but for socks I like the speed and familiarity of the Turkish CO. The little inside gap has never bothered me, and it's so automatic for me that it's a pleasure to do. It's silly, but it just feels like casting on to me, you know? Like, "Here I am, ready to make a pair of socks from scratch."

Molly - love your stash photos! That's what my sock stash looks like - row upon row of it and I love it all!
As for favorite sock patterns, anything by Lisa Parker of Wildhorse Farm Designs. Seriously - I seem to love every single pattern that she designs and am trying to do them all.

molly--have you used lisa's sock or sock merino? i would love to try her yarn out, but i'm unsure which one i'd like more. right now i'm a little in love with the feel of the koigu i just got, and would like every bit of yarn i touch to feel like that. forever. :)
i am loving lisa's colorways and price, though, and would love to support her. what do you think? |

This is where you can find Lisa Souza's hand dyed sock yarn. It is really great to knit with. I've used the Sock! yarn. Just a happy customer.

My favorite pattern is also cobbled together from other patterns. I swear by the Knitty Magic Cast on and I love the heel from the Generic Your Putting Me On Sock, then add your favorite cuff, be it ribbed or something more fancy. I have the links on my blog and you can see my latest pair: http://greyhoundknitter.blogspot.com/ Oh yeah, knit with my favorite yarn Socks that Rock! |

I can't pick a favorite! Every time I do a new pattern, I love it! I love the Gent's Fancy Socks from Knitting Vintage Socks that I did in Trekking, as well as the Simply Lovely Lace Socks from IK. Falling Leaves from Knitty was also fun! I'm currently doing a custom designed pair for my sister with a DNA cable down the back! yet another fun sock!
