The KR Forums have been active and thriving for five years now, which means that we have a huge, and I mean H-U-G-E database of posts. Unfortunately the larger the database, the harder it is to search without getting a timeout error message.
Here are some tips for finding what you need here:
1. Use the Google Toolbar. It's free, it's fast, and it really works.
2. Limit your sections. If possible, select a specific section from the "Search Forum" dropdown menu. If you're looking for socks, searching the sock section will be a no-brainer. Some may require multiple searches in different sections, in which case proceed to #3...
3. When specifying what to search, select "Subject Only" instead of "Entire Message." This is helpful if you're looking for something very specific, like a pattern or yarn name. This speeds up the search because the engine doesn't have to search through the contents of hundreds of thousands of posts - just the titles.
4. REMEMBER THE ARCHIVES! There's gold in them thar hills! In order to make the forums run faster, I archive old posts - clicking that "Archived Posts" is your key to that gold.
5. Limit the date range of your search. I generally find "Since 120 Days Ago" will get me what I need unless it's something very specific.
6. Search By Member is only helpful if you remember the member's name and want to find something s/he specifically said about something. You'll still need to search on a term, and then limit the search to just posts by that specific member.
Thanks for your patience with this obvious frustration. I'll be moving us to a new system in the next six months or so. It'll be a BIG CHANGE but one of the benefits is much better search. Until then, see the above tips.
Happy searching!
