With so much left-over Cascade 220 from clog projects, etc. I decided to start making tessellating fish to eventually put together for "The Fish Blanket" http://www.yarnharlot.ca/blog/archives/2006/05/02/longest_ever.html (scroll down)
Anyone else made this? I am wondering if I need to keep a long tail of yarn on each one to use in joining or what . . . ?
So far I only have four fish, so there is plenty of time to get answers!

That is SO cool...I know if I were making it, it'd end up a stack of knitted fish though. A kettle of fish, so to speak.

I'm making a crochet version right now as a baby blanket for a good friend. I figure I'm going to need 32 fish so I'm a little over halfway through with the fish-making. I have a goal of making a fish a day in hopes that the blanket will be finished at worst not THAT long after the baby is. It takes a little over an hour for me to crochet a fish, so that's reasonable.
I like my friend and she likes fish, and I wanted to try it but didn't necessarily feel like making enough fish for an adult-sized blanket, so it was a logical choice for a baby gift. However, I'm starting to feel like a crochet fish machine. I think if she and her husband have a second child it's getting booties. :-) (OK, not that bad. Maybe a cute sweater.) It may be more fun if you're making the occasional fish now and then as a long-term projet, rather than doing nothing but churning out fish on a deadline. (I'm thinking of giving myself permission to work on something else after I've finished my fish-a-day or I'm going to go nuts.)
I'm trying to leave enough tail to sew the two tails together (I forget how it's knitted, but I'm crocheting it head-to-tail) and plan to use seperate yarn for the sides. I've only seamed together a few fish so far, so no word on how well that plan will work out.
The few fish I've seamed so far are cute, though. |

The Pattern is from the Summer 1998 Knitter's Magazine. The Issue is out of print...I think someone on the forums re-created the pattern, but I can't for the life of me remember any more details than that.

Help us out! Hook us up with some knitted directions!!! Now I want to ditch the baby blanket I've got on needles (stalled) and go for this one!

Yes, ma'am!
Yesterday I did a Google search for "Fish blanket" and these are the links that I saved. I am using the individual pattern from the last one, although there is an error as pointed out in the comments to the author. (When the SSK and K2tog are next to each other, I just eliminated the K2tog--this makes the neat peak at the top of the "fin") It also makes sense to me to slip the first stitches . . .

I want to ask a friend of mine who is an artist to explain a bit more about color composition, as I don't understand why the jinjifore blanket is so beautiful--I don't understand the color theory she used (she talks about the contrasts) that is right in front of my eyes. (I can be pretty dense)
Hope this helps . . . if anyone finds more/better instructions or has ideas on color theory, pipe up!
BTW, it was taking me about an hour to do each of those fish yesterday, so I was interested to read that wasn't so far off the mark. Of course, I did have a glass of wine out next to me . . .

| Well, it takes me an hourish to crochet a fish. If it also takes an hour to knit a fish then I'm depressed. :-) How big a fish? |

I've been knitting these fish, off and on, for over a year (this was supposed to be a Xmas gift). So far, I have a plastic grocery bag of knitted fishes, but I need a lot more. The good thing about this pattern is that after the first few fishes, you don't need to refer to the pattern because it is an easy pattern. I've left a fairly long tail on the cast on and bind off because I haven't decided the order I'm going to sew them together.
Bethany - I have never timed myself, but I know it doesn't take an hour to knit one fish. The fishes I am knitting are about 6" with worsted weight wool and US 8 needles. The gills (where there is st st) are puckering, i.e., not laying flat.
I wish I could see the jinjifore site. I keep getting timed-out ~ even when I copy and paste the URL.

I am making some of these fish from the last link listed above to a blanket for my cat. [meow] I am leaving a tail so I can weave at least two together. You can see a pic from last summer here on my blog.
Temari...that site you can't see is the same picture that is posted on the Yarn Harlot's site that mean mama posted.

OK, that makes me feel better, since my fish are 10" long with Shine Sport. I thought it strange since one of the reasons I wanted to crochet the thing is that it (normally) is faster than knitting for the same area of fabric. :-)
Don't mind me, the fish are driving me a little nutty... but I think I did a fish and a half today! Once I finish this one I'll have 20 down, 12 to go... |

I made felted fish for my baby niece for Christmas. I think this blanket, in pinks and blues like the felted fish, would be great to add to it. I guess I could have one done by her birthday in mid-October. I just need to get the yarn and figure out how many fish I'd need for a blanket for a 1 year old.
Take care! Brandy

Here's a thread where we talked about the fish blanket before. http://knittersreview.com/forum/topic.asp?ARCHIVE=true&TOPIC_ID=39886 I can't check either set of links right now...those posted above or those in the other thread, but it seems like there was a pattern that described knitting the fish together as you made them. So you made 'fish sticks' (ha ha...couldn't resist)! Actually you made fish strips. I have yarn gathered but haven't started yet. Since it took me a year to sew up my granny squares I need something I can put together while knitting!

I would love to make this for one of my best friends who's baby is due in May! I'm also a little worried about the idea of sewing all those fish together. May you could single crochet them together? Here's another picture I found on someone's blog. I love the trim.

| I was just reading through the pattern from one of the links. Can someone tell me what "Kfb" means? Is it "knit from back"? If this is what it means, how do I do it? |
