Hello In a couple of weeks we'll be having a small cotton spinning workshop at my guild. None of us are experts at this, most of us haven't even tried spinning cotton before. We'll be buying some fibers to set together a cotton kit, including a takhli spindle. My question is if you know of any good references that I can use to put together an info sheet on various aspects of cotton spinning? Spin Off articles are often great, but we don't have that magazine here in Sweden, except for a few issues. Is there a book or small pamphlet that you would recommend?
We also plan to watch SPINNING COTTON, SILK, & FLAX with Patsy Zawistoski, and hope this will help us. Any ideas or comments are gladly accepted!

Patsy's video is for the flyer wheel, and it's great. Not sure whether it will help a lot with the thakli, though. The Indian charkha, traditionally used for spinning cotton, is a spindle wheel (i. e. no flyer), and there's one video by Eileen Hallmann ("Spinning Cotton on a Charkha", or similar) that's geared specifically to the Indian book or box charkha (I have that video, it's great), and another one by ? Benetto (?) that deals apparantly with several types of small spindle wheels (but I don't have that one). I don't have a book on cotton, but there's a few pages in Miriam Meertens's "Das grosse Spinnbuch" - if any of you read German I could scan them and mail them to you (before anybody complains - that's legal under German copyright law as the book has been out of print for more than two years). Connie Delaney's "Spindle Spinning from Novice to Expert" contains a chapter on the supported spindle. It's an inexpensive (but very useful) little booklet on all types of spindles and available from U.S. fibre shops.
Good luck for your workshop! Klara

Thank you! I'll PM you about that German chapter. I've found a referense for a small (12 pages) booklet: Spindle Spinning Cotton: An Introduction to the Technique by Patricia Baines
It seems to be hard to get hold of though. Does anyone know if it is any good?
