I've been knitting and crocheting for a LONG time but only recently started trying to read patterns. There is a lot you can do that is square or rectangular and I figured out some circular stuff on my own (go me!)
Anyway, I found this "easy" pattern I want to do at the lionbrand website. Got my yarn, got my hook, ready to go. Step 1: with B ch 2 - got it. Chained 2 stitches with color B. Step 2: Work 6 sc in first ch. = Um what? I know it says to work 6 single crochet in first chain but I can't visualize how to do this.
The next row is 2 sc in each sc around (12 sc) which I am pretty sure I can do (you just put the hook in the same "hole" twice and do a single crochet each time right?)
So I'm feeling like a dumbass with my yarn, pattern, hook and blank stare. Can someone help me "visualize" how to sc 6 stitches onto 2 chained stitches?

You've pretty much got it figured out already. In the second row you say to 'put the hook in the same hole twice and do a single crochet each time'. Well, in the row that you are uncertain about, you're essentially going to do the same thing. Put your hook in the same 'hole' (chain stitch) six times and do a single crochet each time.
Obviously I haven't looked at the pattern, but I'm actually a little uncertain as to which chain the pattern is referring to. Technically, 'in first chain' would mean the chain stitch that is right next to the hook. But by what you've written, it kind of seems like the pattern is wanting you to make a circle. If that's the case you'd want to do the 6 sc in the second chain (the original slip knot) so that there wouldn't be a stitch just flapping in the breeze.
I apologize if that last part confuses you, but now that you know HOW to do the 6 sc in one chain, you might want to experiment a little bit with WHERE to do it. Make one sample working the 6 sc in the first chain and then make another one working them in the second chain to see which one looks right.
Hope this helps! |

In circular crochet, when getting started you usually chain a few and then do a slip stitch with the first chain to make a circle and then do x number of stitches in the circle to get started.
I'm not sure what you are making, but you'll just keep going back into the same stitch to do your 6 sc. It might get a bit tight towards the last couple of stitches.
Hope that helps! Good luck!

Guess it would've been helpful to y'all to visualize what I'm trying to make. Ha ha ha
It is the Amigurumi Penguin from the LionBrand.com website (my son loves penguins). I don't think I can post a link but here's the picture:

| If this is what I'm thinking you chain one- this is where your 6 sc will be- make 2nd chain think of that as your turning stitch. Think of it as when your using dbl you chain 3 turn. That 2nd chain chain is your"turning stitch" Now poke your hook through the 1st ch and make an SC. Now do it 5 more time in the same hole. It will get a little crowded but they will kind of slip around and end up making a circle. Hope that helps. |
