| My sister has been crocheting a blanket for her new nephew. She has put so much time into it and it is beautiful, however, it is not a rectangle. Apparently - her tension grew gradually tighter as she went along. Any suggestions would be appreciated! |

Did her tension get tighter or did she forget a turning chain?

This happened to me too, tension loosened A LOT. I had the same # of stitches, yet 6" wider at the top than bottom, in only 3ft of blanket. I ripped it all out, all single crochet too 
My only suggestion, is it a huge difference? If not huge, cane she maybe fix it with blocking and some sort of border?

If she forgot a turning chain she can actually crochet a triangular piece to match up and make it into a square or rectangle (think modern graphic). Then add a border and she's good to go.
Or like Mindy said, wash it, stretch and block it as much as she can, then steam to set and add a big border. Chances are no one will notice and she can gift an imperfect blankie with perfect love for the new baby.

That's really too bad. Since the chain base won't expand, the advice is to measure it without stretching but even a pattern can affect the result. Yes, that far end sure will stretch out Mindy-O, so that explains the expansion as the work progresses.
As Amanda pointed out forgetting the chain stitch at the turning would cause the other. Such a shame. Llinn's solution would work but the only other solution is to start all over, or at least rip back to where your sister thinks that it's the correct width.
