I would like to make a square afghan for my niece. Does anyone have some easy instructions for a center-out square to start the afghan? Thanks! Kathleen

p.s. 2 friends and I are coming to the Maryland W&S Show - YEAH! My first time!

Have you ever knit a circle? A square is made the same way. Start with a circular cast on of 8 stitches, knit the next row, row 2. Now if you were to make a circle, you would make 8 evenly spaced increases every other row. For a square you simply respace the increases putting 2 in each corner. Back to the sample, you have 8 stitches.
Row 3--*k1,m1,k1,m1* repeat an additional 3 times.
Row 4--and all even rows--knit.
Row 5--*k2, m1,k1,m1,k1* repeat 3 times.
Row 7--*k3, m1,k1,m1.k2* repeat 3 times
Row 9--*k4, m1,k1,m1.k3* repeat 3 times
Row 7--*k5, m1,k1,m1.k4* repeat 3 times
Row 7--*k7, m1,k1,m1.k5* repeat 3 times
Continue in the same manner until size desired. Patterning can be done on the solid knit stitches between the corners. If you need help with the circular cast on, I have a tutorial on my blog. Let me know and I'll post the link.

I stumbled on this picture this morning which shows another way to knit a square from the center out starting with a knit center section and then picking up stitches around it. If you look closely at the corners, they are the same construction as the sample I wrote above with a simple lace pattern between corners.

Here is the pattern for that shawl:
