Is there any truth to something I saw posted that suggested that Barnes and Noble plans to file for bankruptcy? Truth or looney rumor?
Seeing as we have two Nooks, the apps, and tons of eBooks, I'm really hoping it's not true...

I googled the subject, and it looks like they're definitely having problems. I can understand it - I used to buy lots of kids books there, but my own were usually purchased from Amazon. Now I have a Kindle, and all my books are ebooks. I go to B&N to browse, drink Starbucks, and maybe have a slice of cheesecake. The book business has always been tough, and it's getting tougher.

You can say that again! The whole business of selling books is changing rapidly, and we independent bookstores are learning that if we're nimble and think ahead, we'll make it — with a lot of hard work. B&N isn't set up to think on its feet. Please folks, support your local indie (if you can find one, in person or online through Indiebound). And Pam, you'll always be able to use your Nook, because Google eBooks supports it, and lots of indies sell Google eBooks on their websites.

I took a look at this...there was speculation in the early part of the year...that B&N would be filing for bankruptcy. I doubt that it's a reality since on September 16, 2011, they bought the IP assets of Borders Group.
Haven't gone the e-book route myself...turns out (at least during my last round of jury duty) ... one needs to have the old-fashioned books ... all e-devices need to be off in the courtroom ... Phew! one good thing about being a turtle :) |

This is hard news to take, but the big box booksellers drove a lot of small book stores here out, and now I guess it's happening again. I miss Borders and I will miss Barnes and Nobles, if they are indeed going out of business, but I sure the heck miss Yellow Brick Road. My sister and I and my kids -when they were young - were always in that sweet store.
We always shop at Logos when we can, too. We load up there!

We love our indie book stores! They are so personable and friendly. We go to the big book stores mostly to bide time waiting for a movie to start and have some coffee. I can't remember the last time I actually bought books there though. I will admit that Amazon is my main book buying place though.

And when we lose a sense of that value we start to lose a sense of ourselves. Think of the effort to support independent bookstores as being akin to the slow food movement. It isn’t faster or more efficient. But it is better. It offers time to appreciate instead of just consume."
If we love indie bookstores, we have to shop at them, or they will die. Please visit IndieBound to find one that's near you or that has an online store.
I'll stop now. I appreciate everyone's opinions and thoughts. I'm on the front lines (I've managed an indie bookstore for 15 years, and I'm now in charge of our website) and I get worked up from time to time.

Jane, please keep reminding us of independent bookstores. They are no longer part of my everyday life, because so many have closed. I have to seek them out. I went to the "Indiebound" website to make sure that Powell's is a member (it is). While on the website I learned about a few interesting possibilities in my area that I will try to visit.

The thing I always like about local book stores is that they often have books the big chains don't. I know the chains can special-order, but it's fun to go in a small book store and discover some book you haven't seen anywhere else.

I visit Strand Book Store once a week. It is certainly one-of-a-kind book store, but I don't think you can call it indie. It used to be a real mess years ago, but they have cleaned it up, and now even have a small section with knitting books and other crafts all in one place on the second floor. B and N is so off putting.
