Break your foot.
I have been falling over a lot lately. We are looking into why but this last time, yesterday, I broke my foot. Still a bit concussed from hitting my head the time before that (3 days before) so I really need to be careful but it is really a great opportunity to get some knitting done. I have darned every sock in the house that needed it. Seven pairs.
BTW does anyone else out there darn socks?

Grandmoogi it must be in the air I fell last week crossing the street. I hit the curve and stop traffic. I didn't hurt any thing but the doctors ask me if there was anything on my mind when I fell.I had to laugh because I was walking and working out a problem in my head of a pattern I was stuck on. Its funny as soon as I hit the ground I figured out what I was doing wrong. I sat on the curve for a while. I came out with scared knees. Take care of yourself and I wish you a speedy recovery. Donna
PS I would love to learn how to darn the heel of a hand made sock. |

| Ouch...falling is not good! I do it often enough. And for every fall, there are a dozen "almost-falls." The best (and safest) way to avoid falling is to sit on your duff and knit all day! Take it from one who does just that! Feel better! |

That hurts! Sorry to hear you broke your foot, they take a good deal of time to heal. A few years ago I broke bones in both my feet (not at the same time) spontaneously....never did figure out why, but I did spend several weeks in a "boot". Needless to say, I can empathize.

I've heard people go through pain for their art, but Grand-Moogi you've taken this to a new level. Glad your socks a hole free, and sure hope you heal up quickly!

Only hand knit ones. I use my great grandma's darning egg if I need one but I usually try to catch them quick. Sorry to hear about your foot, I hope they find the cause soon. In the mean time enjoy your down time.

The broken foot is not really giving me much trouble. The other sprained one hurts more but my DH and DD are taking very good care of me.
I darned all the socks and then asked them to bring my knitting. I have actually finished one of those cardigans so I think it is probably worth it.
Donna, I have a method I use to patch knitting. It is different to what I do to darn socks. I will try to get some pics of it and post to show you.

When your doctors figure it out, the why you tip over, let me know! I tipped over backwards the other day and haven't the slightest idea why!
I have a wicker basket, sort of like an old fashioned bath tub, but smaller. I keep all of my winter sweat shirts, sweat pants, night shirts, etc in it. When I tipped over that is where I landed! You might say I had a soft landing!

The other foot was not getting over the whole repeated falls thing so had it Xrayed too and it is also chipped. Not serious but explains why it was so tender. I am getting a lot of knitting done.
I also spent a whole day sewing last week and made a frilly round table cloth for DD's bedroom.

As to the 'why' of falling - I have a sort of rheumatoid arthritis in a lot of different joints. It is in my sacroiliac joints. I do not lift my feet properly so I tend to trip a lot. I just need to remember this and be more careful.

Two of my daughters have experienced "falling"...actually passing out as their blood pressure drops when they stand up. Usually, they have a "feeling" and sit down before they fall, but one time DD4 landed in the open dishwasher, after she hit her head on the edge of the counter. She cut her forehead to the bone, and the dishwasher has never been the same - the door sags a bit.
Hope you get to the bottom of your problem so it doesn't happen again!

OMG. That is so scary. I became tired of getting holes in the cutlery basket because the pointy ends of steak knives would cut through them so I developed the habit of putting them in handle first. If someone fell onto the dish washer with the basket drawer out it would very easily kill them. I hope you daughter is OK. That story will give me nightmares.

Yes, Jan, shocking. I thought the same thing Grand-Moogi did: that could kill someone. So glad she's ok.
Grand-Moogi, I hope your foot is healing up well, even though it might mean you get less knitting in. I got your fall confused with somebody else's fall, and the somebody else who fell was the one who wasn't sure why it was happening. I thought it was you... hope I didn't pry! (:

It WAS scary, and I wasn't even home at the time. DH was six feet away, making his breakfast, when he turned around at the sound of the crash. He called me on the way to the ER, and since I work down the hall, I ran to meet them. DD was 17 at the time, and was embarrassed, and upset to have all the stitches on her forehead where "people will SEE them!" I took her home later, but she didn't want any pampering, and she left with friends a couple hours later. I think that I was the one who was more shook up, and took the rest of the day off!

Jan, you would have been far more conscious of just how narrow was her escape. I do not blame you for being very shaken. Lucky your DH was at home at the time. Even that fact sends a shiver down the spine because you think "What if he was not at home?" We can't help thinking these things. I am glad she is OK and quite frankly "blow the dishwasher" (I actually wrote another word starting with B and rhyming with Lugger but thought better of it)
I think I am going to put the steak knives in pointy end down from now on.
Robinsteph, no worries, we chat about things here and I think our experiences help one another in all sorts of ways not just in knitting. For example, Jan's story about her DD falling into the dishwasher could actually save someone's life if they take care not to put pointy ends up in the dishwasher as a result of reading that story.

Yeah, at seventeen I surely would not have thought of the "what if's of that situation" I just would have been embarrassed. Now, at 43, just thinking about this happening to your child I get queasy. Things like this have happened to my niece, and my sister and I just have about collapsed with fear and here comes my ten-year-old niece with this "what?" look on her face.
Grand-Moogi, yes, you are right, about chatting about all sorts of things. Just wanted to mention it. (:
Before reading Jan's post I wouldn't have imagined somebody falling into a dishwasher. But now I'm thinking, why ever not? I trip over it all the time! Knives=points down.

Grand-moogy, hope your foot heals fast and well. In the meantime, get lots of knitting done.
I had quite a bout of vertigo earlier this summer. I walked like a drunkard and fell over easily and there is no treatment for it. It lasted about 10 days. It was a nasty thing, I sat and knitted to my heart's content without anyone (DH) making commentaries about how much I knit.
