Hello Fellow knitters!! I’m new to the forum and I’m super excited to be here! I’m new to knitting but I’m been a crafter all my life. I’ve been knitting now for a few months and I’m obsessed. I always wanted to learn how to knit so about a year ago I purchased a kit at Michael’s craft store with needles and I wasn’t successful so I stuck it into a drawer and never looked at it again. Then a few months later a county book of classes came in the mail and I noticed a knitting class for all levels so I thought why not give it a try and let’s just say I haven’t put down my needles yet (or purchasing supplies <oh boy> ) and I’ve become passionate about knitting.

The first week of class the teacher told me the best beginner’s project was a wash cloth. She showed me how to cast on & knit & purl and after the two hour class I was on a roll. During the week between the next class, I had made many wash clothes and wanted something more challenging. So I kept finding more patterns that were harder.

I really feel in love with felting. I have made a few purses and slippers that were felted. I love the way it looks so different before and after its completely felted. It was a great way for me to prefect my stitching too because once I felt the project it hides all my mistakes.

And now after only knitting a few months I’m going attempt to make my 1st sweater. Wish me luck!

I look forward to learning and soaking up everyone knowledge

Hooray, another convert! Knitting and fiber-related obsessions are the best obsessions ever. Sounds like you're making super-fast progress, with making items that need shaping and all, like purses and slippers. Let us know how your sweater comes along!

Hi, I too am fairly new to the forums though I have knitted for years..

I have been looking for 10 inch dpn needles as I prefer to knit in the round and these are great for sleeves. It seems no is making them anymore. I guard the ones I have. I just broke three of them and knew I could not replace them commercially so I decided to make my own out of dowels,a small sharp whittle knife and sandpaper,,I am so proud they came out wonderful,,so far size 10.5 and 8 the circumfrence of the dowel is the hard part..
Having great fun.

Welcome from California! I remember taking my first knitting classes at Michaels about 10 years ago! After that, I got a group of my friends together, showed them what I had learned and we all continued learning and teaching each other from there.

Memoir, why don't you use circulars?

Memoir,I agree with Grand-moogi, try circulars. The magic loop method totally frees you from double point needles and you don't have to worry about dropping a needle!

well I have used circulers and sometimes they work and sometimes they don't, if you have ten inch dpn, nothing slips off. I have all sizes of dpn, short and long and use all of them, but there is nothing better to knit a sleeve in the round than ten inch dpn. Or a collar.

I have tried circular, but the length of those is tricky. Not always fitting.

By the way my home made 10 inch came out so wonderful I am going to stain them and give a set to my sister in law who is the one who taught me to knit so many years ago..Regards
memoir and thanks for the tip. Always welcome from all. Do we have a spell check here I don't seem to be able to find it.

About circs -- try using two (helps if they are different lengths so you can tell one from another).

The only long DPs I've seen (like your ten inch ones) belong to women in my Monday group who are from China or Vietnam.

Oh, and you said greetings from Joisey -- where?? My father worked in West Orange, I got my teeth straightened in Perth Amboy, and cousins lived in Moorestown (no, not Morristown -- that's much bigger). So where in Jersey are you?? I now live in CA tho I grew up on Staten Island, right across from Perth Amboy.

Margie and Mimi (my hearing dog who doesn't knit -- yet)

yes I have tried the double circle technique and it is ok,, but as with all things we learned on,, the 10 inch dpn works best for me, I have made and am in the process of using the book by Clara Parks The Knitters book of socks,,,to knit the socks on page176,, it uses the double needle technique.. but for me 10 inch are the best so if you know anyone who would like to sell her 10 inch or if you could find out where your friends got theres, and if I could do the same I would be grateful..

regards
