The yarn is often too fat to pass through the button's holes. I'm a spinner, too, so I restore the fat yarn to fiber with some wool carders, spin the yarn really thin and then ply it. Soak and dry to set, and voila! Button sewing yarn in the same dye lot!

Oh yes, please do! I am REALLY opposed to using sewing thread for buttons. This way you get exactly the right color. I like to ply the yarn for strength, but of course that means the actual spun yarn needs to be even thinner.
And make sure your buttonholes are big enough.
