i want to start needle felting to embellish some of my felted bags...how/where do i start? we have a LYS that sells supplies, do i just buy a needle and start poking away?

Pretty much. :-) I made a post on the LJ Knitting community with step-by-step photos of how I needle-felted a celtic knot onto a purse. Obviously this is only one of many ways one could do something like this:
