I read a note on another forum today by a woman who knits four washcloths or other squares simultaneously. This sounds to me more like work than fun, although I might try two at a time. I think that might be good for learning new patterns. Fran, thanks for the 10 minute plan, I am using it on my hats. Warmly, Chayah

Even though Fran's 10 minute rule would be great, there are many days I only have 10 minutes to knit. This being said, I would get bored if everyday was the same. SO, I like Wen, am comfortable with many UFOs - just don't ask me to count them. Am I OCD or ADD? Maybe a little of both, but it is my passion and hobby and I love it!

You have 10 minutes!?!?!
(Old Monty Python routine, where everyone goes one up on how bad they have it). Some times/lives are more frantic than others. If you like having a bunch of stuff to play with at the same time, more power to you. I try to keep it down, for space reasons. (But my book on lace came this morning! How will I ever NOT start a new project )

If I spent 10 minutes a day on my current project I would be 103 years old when it's finished.
And I am a fast knitter.

So GFTC, are you trying to make me feel guilty? You're the one who offered to knit me a laceweight house cozy. You can stop any time.

No, Clara, that wasn't me. My current obsession is cables. I'm knitting you the Aran nightgown that you wanted on the other thread.
Oh, and thanks ever so for moving the Retreat to NYC. I hope that wasn't a secret.

I always have at least 2 wips and up to about 4-5. I have one that is challenging so I am learning a new skill, counting rows, etc. This one I work on at home or at a friends house while watching movies so I can concentrate. I also have one that is easy and small I can take with me anywhere. This one I can work on during breaks, waiting in line, etc. I need to be able to carry it easily and set it down on the spot without always losing my place. Then I usually have 2-3 "in-between" projects that I can take places but maybe are too big to take to work, something a little fun, something I can do while chatting with friends on a Friday night, etc. I work on them all pretty evenly so they all get done. I always make sure not to ignore one when I start another and it seems to be going well. |

Oh brother...I was off to the races with this 10 minute rule and actually finished the back of a vary complicated patterned sweater for my daughter that I started in 2001!! She probably does not even want the darn thing now. I worked on it consistently 10 minutes a day for several months and then....I lost it! This is what always happens to me...I can't find the darn project no matter where I look. It must be psychological. I actually came across the knitting bag with this project in it the other day and I remembered that I had vowed to knit on it for 10 minutes every day before picking up other knitting. woes me...

10 minute rule: Pick out a project that needs to be finished. Now, you must knit on this project for 10 minutes before you can knit on anything else. That's 10 minutes a day, not every time you sit down to knit. Just knit 10 minutes on it then on what ever you want. You can do 2 10 minute projects at once if you wish but you have to knit 10 minutes on each one each day. You can knit 2 hours on your 10 minute project if you wish but time does not accumulate, tomorrow, you have to put in 10 minutes again. But you can't start a new project until you have 2 old ones finished. That is not as terrible as it sounds. How long would it take you to finish your felted bag if you knit on it 10 minutes a day, 70 minutes a week, 300 minutes or 5 hours a month?
Step 2 Decide how many projects you are comfortable with at a time. In the future, apply the rules again when you need them....
Thank you Fran for posting this! I hope you don't mind but I wrote about it in my blog (www.tinastephen.com/weblog). It's just what I needed to kick my butt in gear. lol

I've got several going as well. Some for as long as 2-3 years. I usually get side tracked by starting gift items. Then in the process of that project I find something new and shiny I want to make for myself. Of course the things for me never get done. I was just joking yesterday that I should pledge to finish EVERY project I have OTN before starting anything else. But before I take the pledge I should cast on every project I want to start (until I run out of needles) that way I won't break it! LOL
I did the work from stash only thing and that worked for over a year. Only bought if I didn't have something appropriate in the bins. In fact a lot of things still come from the stash yarn, but then I got into spinning and have gone nuts with the fiber. And I found an Etsy seller who apparently has the exact same taste in colors that I do, so I have been buying way too much recently. Yarn and fiber both.

I'm working on two big projects and I've pledged that I have to do several rows in the "I don't want to" project before I can go to the one I like. The "I don't want to" project will be great when its done so the effort is worth the tension.

I have on blanket that I started in 2006 still not finished! One scarf and then finger knitting, which I'm experimenting with so I can teach my 6 year old. My Mother knits and she always has a few projects going at once. I think most of us do.

I usually knit for myself and I'm anxious to wear the finished piece. Old projects I have OTN are usually things for kids that have outgrown whatever it was I thought they or their mothers would like. I have a few things in the knitting closet that need to be frogged or repaired. Never a fun project. Once the joy of seeing how a yarn knits up the fun is gone. An old intarsia vest was sidelined by not having the correct yarn to finish and it will look odd with something different. Sounds like most of us have similar problems! Considering the problems we could have that's pretty minor.

I don't consider having multiple projects a bad habit anymore than having different varieties of coffee, tea, fruit, vegetables or salad dressing in the fridge and pantry.
Sometimes I want a light meal or snack, akin to knitting a face cloth, yet some days a craving for Full English Breakfast kicks in, sort of like wanting to work on a blanket all day.

I have 4 WIP's, pared down from 8 or 9 last year. I have only visit the LYS (local yarn shop) twice this year; I won't buy more yarn until these WIP's are finished and my stash diminishes.
