| My preference for knitting socks is KP's options - either the slippery shiny ones or the multi colored wooden ones. Also use Cat Bordhi's 2 needle 24" method and do 2 socks at a time which requires another set of 2 needles. Failed miserably at magic loop. Have also used the 2 needle circulars on hats, mitts, etc. While the small sock needles are fixed circulars I also recommend the option set which I use for so many other knitting projects. The flexible cables are what really sold me on options. The addis I bought and tried were not satisfactory to me. By the way I'm 86 and have worn glasses for most of my life and yes I make sure I have adequate lighting especially with dark colors in the evening. Love circular knitting and Option needles. |

Since I started this thread I've joined two sock KALs on Ravelry. I started off using KnitPicks Classic Circulars in sizes 1 and 3 and for the most part was satisfied with them. However, the two-at-a-time method drove me nuts with the coiling cords, and even after dipping them in hot water to relax the coils, they soon sprung back.
So I took some advice from the forum members there and bought some ChiaoGoo Red Lace circulars. Really prefer the cords, as they have no "memory" and are much more manageable, although I still find they get in my way doing 2AAT. They're fine doing Magic Loop with only one sock, but I find I really prefer using two circulars, which eliminates the coiling problem.
As far as the joins go, I haven't had significant problems with either brand. I find the KnitPicks needles slicker than the ChiaoGoo, which have a very subtle "tooth." My stitches still glide nicely over both, but the ChiaoGoo might be better with smoother yarns (I'm currently using a wool/nylon blend).
I own a set of Denise interchangeables as well as my first purchase, the Boye interchangeables. I hate the Boye cords but I found a forum on Ravelry with ingenious instructions for creating your own cords for the Boyes out of weed whacker cord! I'm definitely going to try that at some point, as I love my Boye needles (I prefer metal, and they have lovely colors). The Denise are perfectly adequate but I dislike the feel of the plastic.
Of course, interchangeables can only go down so far, so for sizes 0-3 I've invested in fixed circulars.

I know I'm very late to this thread but I wanted to add my input. I've used both the nickle plated and harmony needles from knitpicks and they both work great. The only problem I've had so far is that the harmony (wood) needle broke in the middle of my second sock. The metal ones are much better in that aspect.
I've also used Addi needles and they are great too! I've not used the HiyaHiya needles for socks yet but I've used them for other projects and they are very nice.
For the money, IMO, I would get the nickle plated Knitpicks. For socks, they are wonderful! |

Well, some time has passed during which I've had the chance to use both my KnitPicks and ChiaoGoo needles, and for lace or fingering weight yarns I definitely prefer the ChaioGoos, particularly when I'm doing 2AAT. It's the cords; I really like the flexibility of the cords. KnitPicks cords just retain too much memory and the coiling drives me nuts.
I bought a pair of ChaioGoo bamboo circulars to work with a rather slippery sock yarn, and although it helps keep the stitches from slipping off, I don't like the wooden ones at all. I definitely prefer the metal needles.
