Knitter's Review
August 3, 2002

a vase of tools on a windowsillKnitters today have it easy. If we want to start a project, we can simply go to the store, buy yarn, and get started.

But not too long ago we had to raise, feed, shelter, and shear our sheep (or plant, tend, harvest, and prepare the flax), clean and comb the wool, spin and ply the yarn, and then wash, bleach, or dye it before we could knit even one stitch.

Each step required its own set of tools, many of which are almost identical to those available today.

New This Week
This week begins a monthlong exploration of yarn-handling tools with a close-up look at the niddy noddy. More than just a funny-sounding term, this implement is an essential tool for handspinners.

Do you knit while listening to music, and if so, what kinds of music?

August Treat
Sometimes nothing hits the spot like a good piece of chocolate. But who wants to stop at just one piece?

At the end of this month I'll choose one lucky newsletter subscriber to win a gift box containing 1.5 pounds of Scharffen-Berger chocolate. If you've never had this kind of chocolate before, trust me: It's delicious.

Happy knitting, and I'll chat with you in the forums.
