Special Yarn Preview:
Fall Yarns from Knit One Crochet Too

Knit One Crochet Too's new yarns

Knit One Crochet Too (the company also commonly referred to as K1C2 or K1CToo) is now headed up by knitwear designer, editor, and author Hélène Rush. She already has begun making her mark with fresh new designs and yarns, including the three new yarns featured below.

Start planning and stay tuned, because they should be available in yarn stores soon.

Madelaine's true value lies in its unassuming simplicity. At first glance, it looks like your standard Brand X wool. But touch it and you'll be instantly hooked.

Madelaine is extremely soft and supple, composed of four two-ply strands that have been loosely plied together. Its softness makes it ideal for next-to-the-skin wear, even for those of you who may be sensitive to wool.

Composed of 100% superfine Merino, Madelaine knits up at 28 stitches per 4 inch square on US 3 needles. Each skein holds a generous 198 yards and will retail for $9 -- a reasonable price especially considering the quality of the fiber.

The colors are limited to 10 buttery hues of white, yellow, violet, sage, red, purple, blue, and black, all of which coordinate well with other yarns from Knit One Crochet Too.

MelangeA strand of Melange

Melange gave me the biggest "wow" response of the three new yarns from Knit One Crochet Too. In fact, I almost immediately ripped open the skein and started swatching.

Ironically, it ended up being a fairly tricky yarn because of its two fine and totally independent strands. My aluminum needles were far too slick, so I switched to bamboo for greater control.

But I found that the visual effect of this yarn was worth the extra challenge. It pairs the dewlike softness of mohair with the luminous sheen of viscose and nylon, producing an effect that is at once elegant and entirely cuddly.

The yarn is available in eight colors, each of which has a solid-colored strand of fine mohair and a multicolored strand of nubby viscose/nylon. Each is distinct and powerful, especially Passion Pink and Blue Haze (pictured here).

Each skein holds 125 yards and will retail for $11. It knits up at 28 stitches per 4 inch square on US 3 needles, although you can use larger needles for a more open, airy effect. A shawl or evening throw made from Melange would be absolutely splendid.

SprinklesA strand of Sprinkles

What fun, a super-soft, sparkly yarn that's a cross between fur and chenille. Sprinkles is extremely lightweight, which means you get more yarn on each skein. Each 25-gram skein holds 190 yards while, by comparison, each 50-gram skein of Melange holds only 125 yards.

I do not yet know how much each skein will cost. But I can tell you that Sprinkles will be available in seven "grown-up" colors: gold, chocolate, garnet, magenta, concord, cobalt, and jet black. All of the colors are intended to coordinate with other Knit One Crochet Too yarns.

The sparkles add only a faint element of scratchiness to the yarn. This means you could use it for most next-to-the-skin wear, either in the full body of the garment or sparingly for trim and accent.
