Natural wood-based plastic

Located in the Nilgiri mountains of South India, Needle Industries (India) Private Ltd. had its beginnings in 1949 as a manufacturer of gramophone needles. Knitting needles came in the 1960s, then plastics in the 1990s, and the brightly colored Pony Pearl plastic needles were the result.

Bring on the Circulars!
Previously only available in single-pointed straight and DPN form, Pony Pearl needles have recently been released in circular form as well.

As with the other styles of Pony Pearls, the circular needles are made of a natural wood-based plastic. Sizes 3.75 to 5mm (US 5 to 8) are reinforced with a steel rod that tends to rattle when shaken. Some enjoy the sound, others find it distracting.

The needles are lightweight and warm to the touch, yielding slightly under pressure. Knitters with arthritis or other hand problems may especially enjoy the warmth and flexibility.

The plastic surface gives a slight drag to your stitches, helping keep your work secure on the needles without slowing your progress.

Style and Shape
The tips of these needles have an unusual double taper. The initial taper is long and slow, measuring over an inch on the 6mm pair reviewed here. It ends with a far more abrupt taper to a slightly sharp tip.

The other end of each needle angles slightly before meeting the nylon cord, which helps stitches flow smoothly from needle to join and back again. While the cord join is fairly smooth, I could feel a slight ridge along the entire length of the needle.

Anyone with dogs or cats that enjoy snacking on needles will want to keep these out of reach because they will easily sustain bites and tooth marks.
